So, it isn’t weird that lots of women want to know how to stop lipstick smudging when kissing. I know I wanted to know and that’s why I went on a search and did some experimentations!

Below are the things 7 things that worked for me and that helped to not let lipstick get everywhere when kissing!

Read on to find out these 7 things!

How to stop lipstick smudging when kissing?

If it’s not only the lipstick that gets in the way of your makeout session, but there is lots of makeup on your boyfriend’s face, I refer you to the article I wrote about that (How to keep makeup from transferring when kissing)!

If it’s only the lipstick, you can go and try the things I set out for you below.

Prep your lips for the makeout session

It doesn’t matter if you’re only looking for a small peck here and there or a full-blown kissing session, you have to prep your lips… And like all makeup, it just adheres better when the surface where you want to apply it is smooth. So this means that you might want to smoothen and soften your chapped lips.

You can do this by using a lip scrub that helps you to make your lips soft. If will slough away dead skin cells and this will soften and smoothen your lips.

After that, you can apply some lip balm to give your lips that soothing calm treatment it needs.

Lip liner will help you out

There’s one thing that everyone swears by who wants to keep their lipstick in control. That thing is lip liner! Lining your lips prevents lipstick from feathering and what they call “bleeding” out of the edges.

But there is more… What you can also do after lining your lips, is using the lip liner to also color in the rest of your lips. This works great as a base for the rest of your lipstick. This way your lipstick has something to cling onto so that it stays on longer.

Use a long-wear formula

This might speak for itself but it is something that works A long-wear formula can be a matte lipstick for example. matte lipsticks are less likely to slip off of your lips and fade than the screamy ones. So, if you want to have a clean makeout session, you should opt for a long-wear matte lipstick!

Blotting, blotting, blotting

Now, if you don’t have any matte lipstick lying around, you can just apply your regular “creamy” lipstick. But, after you do that, you have to make sure that you blot away any moisture that is on the surface of the lips. This is very simple. Take tissue paper and put it in between your lips. After that, you close your lips and open them again. You’ll see that some excess product will come off. When that is done, you reapply the lipstick and blot again. This way you build intensity and eventually, you have a lipstick that stays where it needs to be!

Ever hear of makeup sealant?

A makeup sealant can be quite handy when you want to kiss your boyfriend without having to think about whether or not you apply lipstick all over his face. A makeup sealant forms a waterproof layer over your lip makeup. The only thing you have to do is apply it and then let it sit while it sets. The best thing about a makeup sealant is that it is made without alcohol so you won’t deprive your lips and skin of essential moisture.

Try a lip primer!

A thing that can also help you not smear the lipstick everywhere is using a lip primer! Lip primers are created to go under lip pencils, lipstick, or gloss. A lip primer creates a smooth surface for your lipstick to adhere to and prevents lipstick from breaking out of your lips.

Make sure you apply lipstick properly

If you want all of it to work well, properly applying your lipstick is also a great tip! Makes sense right? Apply the lipstick carefully and selectively instead of swiping the lip brush everywhere. Swipe it from corner to center instead of the other way around to get well-defined lips and a long-lasting finish.

Extra tip – The thing with all these tips is that you should take your time. It is better to take 10 extra minutes than to hurry through the process… You want your lipstick to be perfect. Not nearly perfect.

Final thoughts

Now that you know all the things that you need to keep in mind while applying your lipstick, you’re good to go and off to your makeout session! I know there are a lot of steps that you can take and maybe not all of them are applicable to you. No problem of course! Find the things that work for you and try them when you kiss your boyfriend. If you see that there’s still some lipstick transfer, you can always come back and do more of the steps.

But, if you want to do it perfectly the first time, it might be handy to take care of all the steps. I’ll lay out the tips for you in short again:

Use lip primer, apply the lipstick properly, use a makeup sealant, blot & blot again, use a long-wear formula for your lipstick, use a lip liner, prep your lips!

I hope this helps and that you now know how to stop lipstick smudging when kissing! Have fun and if you tried some of the tips here and they worked like a charm for you, let me know! I’m always happy to hear success stories :).
