Dyeing or bleaching is a damaging process for your hair. No wonder people ask themselves whether they can dye their hair with coconut oil in it.
Think about it, you want to take proper care of your hair by giving it enough moisture so that dyeing your hair doesn’t do as much damage (because dyeing your hair strips your hair of natural moist).
Now even though this looks like a good idea, you might not want to do this because letting your hair be too oily can affect the outcome of your hair dye. You need residue-free hair so that the hair dye can fully penetrate the hair.
Today we are going to look if you can dye your hair with coconut oil in it, or if it’s better to use coconut oil before and after.
So, if you’ve ever thought about using coconut oil for dyeing or bleaching your hair, this is the article you want to read!
Can I dye my hair with coconut oil in it?
No, you cannot dye your hair with coconut oil in it. This isn’t a good idea because making your hair too oily can affect the outcome of the hair dye process. Your hair needs to be residue-free so that the hair dye you apply has the best chance of giving you a great hair dye job. You can use coconut oil before you dye your hair (more instructions on that below this section) and then use a clarifying shampoo to start with a “clean slate”.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t use coconut oil at all… You can use it, but not directly before you are going to dye your hair. You can use it the weeks and days before you are going to dye your hair to moisturize your hair and keep it as healthy as possible. You can also use coconut oil after you’ve dyed your hair to get your hair healthy again.
But don’t try to dye your hair with coconut oil still in it. It won’t give you the results you are looking for.
What are the benefits of using coconut oil before you dye your hair?
As I just said, you can use coconut oil to counteract the fact that it is a chemical process that dries out your hair and make it as healthy as possible. So, use coconut oil, but do it correctly.
So many of us try to work backward and make our hair healthy again after a hair dye job, but you can just it before you dye your hair, and here’s why:
It’s the best defense
It is not only a beneficial thing to do, it is a must! You see, adding coconut oil to your hair the night before you’re going to dye it, helps you protect your hair from the chemical process that does damage to your hair (that is also why you can’t dye your hair twice in one week). It will help the hair and soothe the scalp against the peroxide that is in the hair dye.
No protein loss on the hair
By using coconut oil you don’t have to work with dry and brittle strands. With coconut oil, you can enrich your hair in such a way that there’s less damage done to your hair!
It’s only natural
This may be my favorite reason. You probably use a lot of hair products that are great for your hair, but nothing beats an oil that can be found in nature. It is only natural.
When you use coconut oil before you dye your hair, you feed your hair with only the best ingredients that give your hair the best chance of looking healthy even after a big hair dye job!
What are the benefits of using coconut oil after you dye your hair?
Now that you know that using coconut oil before you dye your hair is great, you might ask yourself whether using coconut oil after your dye job is beneficial as well. And you might’ve guessed it… Using coconut oil after you’ve dyed your hair is beneficial to your hair indeed :).
What are the benefits you ask?
Healthy hair
From personal experience, I can tell you that when I used coconut oil after a hair dye job, my hair looked healthy again! Even after several days of coloring, my hair looked amazing.
It stays vibrant
In addition to my hair looking healthy, it also stayed vibrant for days on end. This never happened to me when I wasn’t using coconut oil so for me, that was a big win.
It lasts longer so saving money
Another thing that I noticed when I started using coconut oil after my dyed hair is that the color lasted much longer! This was a huge benefit to me. I didn’t have to dye my hair that often so I could pour that time into other activities and I also saved a bunch of money because I didn’t need as much hair dye as I normally would.
The feeling is better
This is also due to the fact that your hair will be healthier when you use coconut oil, but it will also feel softer and will be easier to comb.
It’s shiny!
In addition to my hair being more healthy and the fact that it feels better, it also has a shine over it! Do you sometimes see other women walk with beautiful shiny hair? That can be you!
Final thoughts
So, can you dye your hair with coconut oil still in it? In fact, you can, but it might not be a good idea. Your hair needs to be residue-free so that the hair dye can do its job properly.
This doesn’t mean that there can’t be anything at all in your hair (there can still be a tiny bit left). But you have to do everything in your power to let the hair dye do the best job it can.
I hope you now know that even though you better do not use it directly when you dye your hair, it can be hugely beneficial to do it before and/or after you’ve dyed your hair.
It makes your hair healthier, it makes it shine, and before you dye your hair it evens helps with lessening the damage that the chemical process of dyeing your hair does!
The last thing I want to tell you right now is to be safe when you dye your hair. Follow the instructions carefully and if anything goes wrong, go to your local hair professional and ask for help. They can exactly tell you what you need to do to give your hair the best chance of looking amazing!
