The man emailed me because he is in a new relationship and his girl takes a long, long time to her makeup when they go out. So, he asked me how long it should normally take for a woman to do her makeup.

I was amused by the question and told him how long it would take (give or take). Of course, I also told him that he should be patient because she is making herself beautiful for him!

Although I was amused by the question, I also know for sure that there are other men out there who would like to know how long it takes for girls to do their makeup.

So men, read on to find out how long you can watch your football match before you really have to go ;).

How long does it take to put on makeup?

Okay, I may have misled you a little bit, because I can’t give you a clear timeframe for your particular girl. Every girl is different, but I think there are some rough estimates that I can give you. Below you’ll find a list of how long it can take for different scenarios when girls apply makeup to their face.

Real simple makeup application

When a girl is applying only doing her eyes, say primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, this can be done in about 5 to 10 minutes. This kind of makeup application doesn’t have to take long. Although, when she is listening to music while doing it, it can take a while ;).

The average school/workday

Now, here’s where it gets interesting because time can vary greatly.

For the sake of good measurement, I asked a couple of my friends how long they take to do makeup on a day-to-day basis. They are all working full-time and do this every day which means they have some experience and can do it relatively fast.

The girl who applies her makeup in 25 minutes

Now, my first friend said to me that she can do her makeup in about 25 minutes. This is just her day-to-day makeup so she isn’t going full out, but she wants to look decent and professional. Here’s her routine:

Skincare: first I wash my face, then I moisturize and prime.

Foundation: After the skincare routine I go to the foundation section and apply my setting powder, foundation, concealer, and a little more setting powder. I do this all with a beauty blender.

Eyes & eyebrows: When my foundation is okay, I go in and prime my eyes. After that, I apply eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara. When that is done I break out my eyebrow pencil and feather it out just as much as I like it.

Contour: I grab my KVD contour palette and use the browns first. Add a bit to my checks and use the KVD light powders under my eyes and under my cheek contour.

Finish it off with setting spray: After I’ve applied everything, I spritz my face with a setting spray, let it all blend in and I’m good to go!

I do all this in about 25 minutes. Not bad if you ask me.

The girl who applies her makeup in 15 to 20 minutes

Now, another friend said (when she heard about the 25 minutes described earlier) that she wants to stay in bed as long as possible and that she doesn’t want to apply for makeup for 30 to 45 minutes if she can do less and have more time to wake up.

What she does is almost the same as the girl described above, but she doesn’t apply eyeshadow and eyeliner. She just goes in with some mascara and calls it a day for her eye makeup.

Here’s her routine:

Skincare: She washes her face with soap and then moisturizes and primes her face.

Foundation: She goes in with a little foundation and after that a little setting powder.

Eyes: She only applies some mascara to the eyes and uses a brow pencil to give her eyebrows a touch-up.

Setting spray: When she’s ready she grabs the setting spray and finishes her look.

It only takes her 15 to 20 minutes to do her makeup. This allows her to cuddle with her pillow a little longer!

The girl who applies her makeup in 45 to 60 minutes

The last friend to whom I asked this question, said that she needs a whopping 45 to 60 minutes to do her total beauty morning routine!

My mouth fell open (because I too like to cuddle my pillow as long as I can) and asked her to describe her makeup routine.

Here’s how long it takes her to apply her makeup and what her routine looks like:

Skincare: First I go in with a lotion with salicylic acid (to combat acne) I let it sit for a while and then go in with a pore eraser primer and let it sit for a couple of minutes.

Color corrector: After the skincare routine has set I go in with my color corrector and put on the foundation and concealer with a beauty blender.

Other makeup: Then I put on some setting powder and let it sit for a bit.

In the time that the setting powder sits, I grab my primer and prime my eyelids, and when my eyelids are ready I go in with the eyeshadow.

When all is done I dust off the setting powder with a brush and start working on my eyebrows. I fill them in with a brush.

Then I grab my setting powder again and will lightly set the eyebrows.

After all, is ready I grab a blush and go in with my beauty blender and give my face an extra touch up!

When that is done I grab the mascara and go to work on my eyelashes.

If that isn’t enough (yes when I write it all down it sure seems like a lot), I will go in to highlight and contour my face.

Then, when everything is ready I grab my setting spray and spritz it on my face.

Wow! Here is my friend with about 45 to 60 minutes of makeup routine every morning! When I first heard it I was shocked, but she told me that she really liked it so all is good. She likes the way she looks and that is all that matters!

How long does the average woman take to put on makeup?

The average woman takes just 11 minutes to put on her makeup. I know that after reading the above this sounds weird, but there has been a survey by the Fabulous Magazine which revealed that the average woman takes about 11 minutes to perfect her makeup and go on with her day.

Now, when this survey came out there were a lot of people who disagreed with it and so do I.

I think the above information of my friends is more accurate. I not only base my point on what I hear from them but also on what I hear from people around me.

Sure, some people will take only 10 minutes, but some people even take 2 hours to complete their full look and they are okay with that!

I think that it’s better to say that the average woman needs about 20 to 30 minutes to complete her makeup.

So, guys (if you’re still reading this far). Obviously, the best thing you can do is ask your girl how long it takes her generally to do her makeup. But, you can also do your own calculations (fun!) and see how long she takes. Make it a sport and see if you can push her to be faster ;).

No, all kidding aside, give her the time to look as awesome as she wants. She has to feel good and a little bit of extra time can go a long way!
