Sometimes I walk around in the city that I live in and I see awesome people with awesome hairstyles! Today I went for a walk with my dad and across the street, we saw a girl with black hair. Upon further notice, this girl had black hair but with a purple tint! It looked awesome and I just was in awe of how she looked.
My dad saw my surprise and my admiration so we started talking about if I would consider doing this. I have black hair (or almost black… It is very deep brown). So I could consider it. When he asked me I noticed that I was a little hesitant. I had some insecurities and some questions about it before I would consider it… So, that is what today’s post is about! Let’s dive deeper into the questions that I had. Maybe it answers yours too!
So, how to get black hair with a purple tint? It is very simple. You could put a strong purple semi-permanent hair dye in your hair and you have your purple tint. The only thing is that this will wash out fairly quickly (good to see if you like it). To do this, you can use a color like Deep Purple by special effects. This should give you the purple tint in your black hair that you’re looking for.
How to get black hair with a purple tint
Let’s dive a little deeper into this. If you want to put a purple tint in your black hair, you can do so without much work. You can use the Special Effects Deep Purple. This is a dye that lasts long and is very intense. This helps with giving your hair a purple tint. A too light of color won’t help because it fades too quickly or you won’t see any results at all.
You have to keep in mind that even though Deep Purple by Special Effects is an intense color, it will fade back to your natural black hair color over time. If you want to keep the color, you should repeat the process when you think the purple tint in your hair is gone.
TIP: If you’re going to use the Special Effects dye, you can make it last longer by leaving the hair dye in your hair longer. Grab a plastic bag or cling film and wrap it around your hair when the dye is in your hair. Let it sit for at least 3 hours. This should make the color last longer because the dye has had more time to settle in the hair.

What do you do if you want to get a little more intense tint of purple in your hair?
If you only want there to be a hint of purple in your hair, you can just do what I described above. You can apply a purple hair dye to your black hair and let it sit there for the amount of time it needs to sit.
Now, if you want it to be more noticeable, you should pre-bleach the streaks of your hair that you want to be purple to a medium brown color. After you’ve done that you can color it with the purple color of your choice. This way the purple color will be more visible. The steps to do this are below. Even though those steps are for making your hair black and purple, you can adjust it so that you can make the purple more visible than just a tint.
Can the tint of purple hair fade out in a weird color?
If you’re worried that the fading of the hair color would be weird, you’re worried about nothing. The purple hair color can’t fade in a weird color cause your hair will still be black (although with a little bit of purple in it). As the purple color fades, it will face a more pinky or more blueish color, but it will always still look black except for in bright light.
As I said earlier, for some people just a tint of purple isn’t going to be enough. Some people just want to make their hair a real mix between black and purple. I have to say that I find it amazing when I see photo’s of it, I don’t know if I should ever do it… But for the people who want to know how to do it, below I’ve made a simple guide for you that you can follow so that you can make your hair a mix of black and purple!

How to get black and purple hair?
Now you know how you can give your black hair a touch of purple. But how do you go about it if you really want black and purple hair? So not just a tint of purple, but full-on purple with your black natural hair.
There’s more than one way you can go about it, but first, you have to consider a couple of things:
Long or short-lasting
For most of us going from natural black to black and purple hair color can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why you need to know if you’re going to do this for a short while or if you want to embrace this for a longer period. This is important because this has an impact on why hair dye you’re going to use (temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent).
At home or in a salon?
You should consider if you would do it on your own at home or at a salon. The benefits of the salon are that you know it gets done well because it gets done by a professional. If, on the other hand, you want to do it at home, you can. This would be a nice way to experiment and save some money.
The look you want
I think this is the most important part. You have to decide what color you want in your hair. Sounds simple, but you don’t want to put the wrong color of dye in your hair just to expect the right results. Do your research on which hair dye you need for which colors to appear in your hair.
How to dye your hair black and purple?
Now that you know what things to consider, it is time for you to color your hair! Hopefully, you’ve made all the decisions and are ready to go! Below I’ll give you a step by step mini-guide on how to dye your hair black and purple!
Here goes:
Step 1 – Change clothes
Maybe one of the best things to do is to switch clothes! Just an extra safety precaution so that you don’t mess up your clothes. Grab some clothes that you don’t care about and you’re ready for step 2.
Step 2 Gathering supplies
In this step, you’re going to get your dye supplies! You need the purple color of your choice (or multiple if you’re going to mix it). You can grab the Splat hair Dye “lusty lavender” and the Punky color “Plum” for example to create the purple that you want.
You’ll also need a black hair dye, a bleaching product, and a 30 volume cream developer.
Besides the things I listed above, you’ll also need. Hair clips and elastics so that you can segment your hair, a dye brush, a dye bowl, vaseline (just to protect your hairline cause you don’t want to get the color everywhere!), gloves, and a shower cap.
Make extra sure you grab the right colors! I know it sounds silly but if you mess up here, there’s no recovery.
Step 3 – Section the hair
An easy thing to do is to grab a bundle of hair that you want to dye purple and wrap them in aluminum foil. This way they are protected from the black hair dye. The clips and elastics I talked about in step 2 may come in handy here. You can use them to keep everything in place.
Step 4 (and 5) – Mix the black hair dye and apply it
Follow the instructions on the box from the black hair dye. Mix everything together so that you are ready to use it! If you’ve completed all the steps, you can go and apply the black dye to the hair.
Step 6 – Here’s the shower cap!
Let the black hair dye sit for a moment. This is when you can put on the shower cap so that your hair can retain its moisture. Make sure that the bundles of hair wrapped in aluminum foil are hanging outside the shower cap. Let the dye sit in your hair for the amount of time that the box says it needs to be. After that, you can rinse it all out!
Step 7 – Bleach the streaks
Now the fun part starts. After you’ve rinsed your hair, you can dry it and remove the aluminum foil. After you’ve done that you should bleach each streak until it reaches a light blonde color. After that, you should let the bleach do its job for about 40 minutes and then go and rinse it out.
Step 8 – The purple dye
Now it is time to apply the purple dye! After you’ve put in the hair dye and made sure you covered everything, you should allow the dye to process. Put on your shower cap again to retain moisture. I know it looks funny but it works! For maximum purple power, you can leave the hair dye overnight.
Step 9 – Rinse and see the results
After you’ve woken up you can rinse all the hair dye out of your hair, dry it and watch the results!
Final thoughts
Me and my friends have already started thinking about putting a purple tint in our hair! We don’t know for sure but maybe if we do it all together it can be a nice experience! Now I hope that you learned a lot about how to get black hair with a purple tint! And if that wasn’t enough, I also hope that you learned a lot about making your hair a mix of black and purple!
