Know The Science Behind Hair Dryer: How Do They Work And Impact On Hair Health

Attractively priced and easy to use, a hair dryer boasts a litany of benefits for your tresses. This device has become a fixture in vanities galore and expedites the evaporation of water molecules from the strands for a glossy, voluminous mane. Also summoned as a prerequisite to different forms of hair styling (re: straightening, curling, crimping, and more), a hair dryer makes the locks manageable by reducing frizz and static. The results? Hair smooth as butter and time-saving styling!  So if your beauty arsenal is missing this multitasking gadget, it’s time to scurry and grab one for all reasons and seasons. Even if you are wearing your hair naturally, with no fuss or frills, a couple of minutes with a hair dryer will make you look sharp and put together.

In this blog, we take you through the origin of hair dryers, their intricate mechanism, and the different types of hair dryers in the market – all to help you make an informed decision. The article then explores some tips and tricks to help you make the best of this heat appliance. So keep scrolling.

Origin Story

The hair dryer that we know today has evolved from prototypes that wouldn’t fare well years down the line. The very first model of this heat appliance was invented by French stylist Alexandre Godefroy in 1888. Godefroy attached a gas stove’s chimney pipe to a bonnet in his salon, that could be only availed by the customer whilst they were seated. Needless to say, while effective, this hair dryer’s immobile and colossal setup made it tiresome to us. Years later, around 1920, handheld hair dryers began to emerge on the beauty horizon. However, instances of electrocution, overheating, and the general heftiness of the equipment required consistent alterations.

How Does A Hair Dryer Work?

A regular, two-switch hair dryer accelerates the evaporation process of water molecules from the strands. The blast of hot air discharged from the dryer increases the air temperature surrounding every filament, expelling excess water from the mane to the environment.

Heating Mechanism

Wondering how a simple, two-switch dryer emits hot air? Well, we have all the answers for you in this blog. All hair dryer models rely on a motor-driven fan and a wired coil (heating element) to function. When you plug your dryer into the socket, it cues a current that supplies power to the wired coil. This current then rotates the motor, turning on the fan located inside your hair dryer. The airflow created by the fan is redirected over the coiled wire (or heating element) and expels hot streams at the other end of the barrel via repeated convection.

Different Types Of Hair Dryer

There are three popular types of hair dryers in the market – ionic, tourmaline, and ceramic.

  • Ionic Hair Dryer: Buy a hair dryer online, This type of hair dryer emits streams of ions that meddle with the water molecules adhering to every strand. The negatively charged ion attracts the positively charged H2O, expediting the evaporation process, and promoting dry and lustrous strands.
  • Tourmaline Hair Dryer: For the unversed, tourmaline is a gemstone that is crushed and ingrained into the appliance. When these fine particles of tourmaline are heated, it generates a copious amount of negative ions that balance the positively charged water molecules for smooth, manageable tresses.
  • Ceramic Hair Dryer: Buy a hair dryer online, A ceramic variant dries hair swiftly while reducing damage. The material heats up quickly and uniformly to generate infrared heat that dries every strand from the inside out. Translation: no visible signs of strain to the cuticles.

How To Use A Hair Dryer

To make the best of a humble yet meticulous hair dryer, follow these steps.

  1. Wash Your Hair: If you are aiming for the perfectly blow-dried tresses, wash and condition your mane first. Opt for a hydrating duo that offsets the damage caused by heat exposure.
  2. Air Dry First: Never blow dry sopping wet hair, it proves counterproductive to attaining frizz-free strands. Use a micro-fibre towel to eliminate excess moisture from the strands (or the strands air dry) before busting out your hair dryer.
  3. Divide And Conquer: To make the best of your heat appliance, make smaller sections with clips in your mane and tackle. Tangle the strands with a wide-toothed comb to minimize breakage and slather them with a potent heat protectant.
  4. Finishing Spray: Once you’re through the process, spritz a generous amount of hair spray to curb the curling or add a slight texture while holding the style on lock. You may also use a gel or cream (suited to your hair type) to tame flyaways or baby hairs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a hair dryer is an essential tool with numerous benefits for your hair, from expediting drying time to facilitating various styling techniques. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek look or embracing your natural hair texture, a hair dryer can help you achieve the desired result quickly and efficiently. By understanding its origin, mechanism, and the different types available, you can make an informed decision when choosing the right one for your needs. So, whether you’re adding it to your beauty arsenal or upgrading your current device, harness the power of the hair dryer to elevate your hair styling routine.
