If you’re anything like me, chances are that when growing up, Disney Princesses had all your undivided attention. Watching the movies again and again until your parents got sick and tired of it.
the last few weeks I did it again! I watched all the movies with Disney Princesses in it and to my surprise my favorite Princesses were the ones with black hair. Apparently I have a weakness for Disney Princesses with the same hair color as I have.
Since I’m yet again obsessed with them, I wanted to make a list of all the Disney Princesses with black hair and some background information for you all to enjoy.
Let’s find out which Princesses meet the criteria (spoiler, not all of them are official Princesses.
Official Princesses with black hair
In the world of Disney there are a lot of official Princesses. Each of the following seven women has been certified as an “Official Disney Princess.”
Snow White
Snow white the Princess that is featured in the animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” that came out in 1937. Snow White is based on a German fairy tail called “Schneewittchen”.
As you might know, Snow White (who was only 14 in the movie) is the first ever Disney Princess in the animated feature. She is the one it all started with almost 9 decades ago.
If you have seen the movie a couple of times (just as I have) you have without a doubt seen that her true love is the Prince, and he wakes up the beautiful princes with black hair with a romantic kiss!
If you don’t find a new blog from me in the next couple of weeks, it’s because I’m rewatching all the Disney movies again!
Jasmine
Jasmin is the second Princess with black hair in the Disney movies, and a favorite of mine. The way she escapes the palace is my favorite scene in the movie. I can’t exactly explain why but maybe it’s due to the fact that I also like to make my own decisions and am not one to pressure into anything.
But I digress…
Did you know that Princess is not the only title she could have? She also could earn the title of Sultana. Below I’ll explain why.
When Jasmine marries Aladdin, Aladdin gains the title Prince Consort. But when the father of Jasmine dies or abdicates in favor of Aladdin (this was the Sultan’s wish), Aladdin would become the Sultan of Agrabah and Jasmine would acquire the title of Sultana.
Pocahontas
“Pocahontas” is a Disney disney Princess since the animated film was released in 1995.
The Pocahontas film is (loosely) based on the historical figure called Pocahontas and the early interactions between the Native Americans and the English Settlers in the 17th century.
What I like about the film (besides the fact that Pocanhontas has black hair) is that it shows the fact that despite differences between people you can always find shared worldviews and philosophies. That’s where the great friendships start!
That’s also why my favorite scene is the moment when Pocahontas and John Smith first meet in the forest.
Mulan
Although Mulan isn’t my favorite Disney Princess, I still enormously like her for her strong personality.
Mulan is a Disney Princess since the movie came out in 1998. For me it’s a movie about true bravery. The story is based on a Chinese legend and it revolves around Mulan who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in the war to save her country from the enemy.
The most iconic scene for me is the scene where Mulan takes a sword and cut off her hair to join the army and the protect not only the dignity of her father, but also of her entire family.
Did you know that the story of Mulan was based on the poem: the Ballad of Mulan?
So, Mulan for me isn’t just purely a Disney Princess. She is a warrior who stood for her country and for the dignity of her family. Not matter the cost. That’s a true warrior to me!
Tiana
Tiana is another official Disney Princess. She became famous when in 2009 the animated Disney Princess had an amazing wedding ceremony, kissed her frog prince and the both became the wonderful Prince and Princess! For me it was the most iconic scene from the entire movie. Oh, I love that one!
The funny thing about the movie is that Tiana always dreamed of having her own restaurant. Now, if my friends read this, you know I love me some good food so it isn’t strange that I was hooked from then on.
The beautiful Tiana with long black hair never aspired to find her true prince. She wanted to start a restaurant. But she did find her prince after all. A magical love story!
Moana
Oh Moana, how the songs are stuck in my head for days on end! The song “How Far I’ll Go” in particular has once stayed in my head for a couple of months (no exaggeration).
For the people who want to listen to it right now:
Moana is a Disney Princess since she starred in the movie Vaiana that came out in 2016.
The movie is about Moana, a brave Polynesian girl who sets out to save her Island. She can save her Island by bringing back a stolen goddess’s heart. Fortunately she doesn’t have to do this alone because she can count on help from the demigod Maui.
The best part (at least that’s why I think), is the fact that she finds herself overcoming challenges, finding her true identity and reviving her people’s seafaring traditions.
For me (and I think a lot of other girls) it is important to see that girls can overcome challenges and find what they’re good at in the world and find their true identity. In that way I think Moana (and the other Disney Princesses of course) is a great role model for young girls!
Raya
Raya is the protagonist of the Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon. The film Raya and the last dragon came out in 2021. Raya is from Southeast asia and specifically from Kumandra. Kumandra is inspired from Southeast asian cultures and geography. Kumandra comprises five separate kingdoms—Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail—that together form the shape of a dragon.
The film with the beautiful Disney Princess with black hair is about Raya. Raya is a skilled warrior from the fictional land called Kumandra. She goes on a quest to find the last dragon so that she can bring unity to her divided world.
The fun part for me is in the fact that Raya is a skilled warrior (I like that kind of movies). She is resourceful and not afraid to take on risks and challenges that come her way. It’s an empowering movie for women!
That is because in my opinion she is not only resourceful and not afraid, she also is kind, compassionate and loyal to anyone she cares about!
Future Princess with black hair
Now we move away from the official Princesses with black hair and move on to what’s to come, what has been and honorary positions. First we start of with a future Disney Princess that has amazingly black hair. I present to you:
Asha
Asha is the main character from the film called “Wish”. Wish is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2023. Asha is the newest Disney Princess. It’s exciting because she’s on the list to become an official Princess of the franchise!
Asha is an 17-year old girl who, together with a cosmic force called “Star” face the most formidable of enemies to save their community. This way she and Star prove that when brave human beings connect with the magic of the stars, amazing things can happen!
I think this is going to be a must watch for everyone!
Do you want to see the trailer of the movie Wish? Check out below the amazing new black-haired Disney Princess Asha!
Former Disney Princesses with black hair
Okay, let’s move on to an amazing former Disney Princess with black hair. We’re going to talk about Esmeralda!
Esmeralda
Esmeralda was an amazing Disney Princess from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. She was a Disney Princess from when the movie came out in 1996 and was removed from the official disney Princess lineup around 2005.
For me the movie (including Esmeralda) was an amazing example of acceptance. Because no matter how you look, you deserve kindness and I think this film portrays that amazingly.
Besides that, I also love the fact that Quasimodo was so eager to enjoy the outside world, that he just escaped and got crowned as “King of Fools.”
I think when I have to summarize it, the film is about:being kind and standing up against bad people. Both Quasimodo and Esmeralda did a great job in showing the world exactly that!
Honorary Official Princesses who have black hair
A honorary official Disney Princess is a Princess that has been associated with the Disney Princess franchise but do not have the status of “official Princess”. This can happen when their movies are too successful and have a franchise on their own. Important to know is that even when they are not official Princesses, each honorary Disney Princess is properly addressed (within the franchise) with the title “Princess”
There are two black-haired honorary Disney Princesses I would like you to meet:
Elena
Elena got her fame when the featured in the film “Elena and the Secret of Avalor” and in the series called: “Elena of Avator” which is produced by Disney Channel.
I found the movie very entertaining to watch! In the movie “Elena and the Secret of Avalor”. her friend Princess Sofia finds out that her friend (Elena of Avalor) has been trapped inside of an amulet for decades by an evil sorceress named Shuriki.
Sofia embarks on a mission to free Elena from the amulet so that the entire kingdom can be saved.
How is Elena a princess you might ask? Elena is the eldest daughter of King Raul and Queen Luci (which makes her a Princess!). Before she could become queen, she had to learn to rule over the kingdom as the Crown Princess until she reached the age to succeed her parents and be named Queen.
Mirabel
Do you know Mirabel? She is one of the stars of the film Encanto! Mirabel is the youngest daughter of the madrigal family and the only child who did not get a gift (spoiler alert: Mirabel did not get a gift because she already had the brains to take as as the leader of the family and therefore the mirable did not have to give her an extra gift).
All well and good, but when the magic is in danger of dissapearing, Mirabel seems the only one in the family to restore the magic.
For me it was an amazing film to watch and the songs stuck in my head for days! The one that stuck out the most was: “We don’t talk about bruno”! If you want a song stuck in your head all day, listen below.
Despite not being an official Disney princess, Mirabel was present with the other Official Princesses in some World Princess Week attractions.
Unofficial Princesses who have black hair
Unofficial Princesses of the Disney realm include characters that meet the qualifications of being a Disney Princess (or have been included in Disney Princess products and promotions) but are not on the official lineup of “official Disney Princesses”. At the moment there are 2 unofficial Disney princesses. See below which ones.
Vanellope von Schweetz
I love this movie (Wreck-it Ralph)! I think it’s one of the cutest movies and I just love Vanellope von Schweetz. The playfulness is very contagious. Besides that, there are huge candy trees in the film. Who doesn’t like that!?
The movie Wreck-it Ralph is set in the world of video games and follows the journey of a video game villain named Ralph who wants to be a hero.
Ralph is the bad guy in a classic arcade game called “Fix-It Felix Jr.” but feels like an outcast and unappreciated by the other video game characters and decides to leave the video game and explore other video games.
Eventually Ralph ends up in a candy-themed racing game called “Sugar Rush” where, he meets Vanellope von Schweetz.
Together they form an unlikely friendship and in their adventures they face challenges, confront their insecurities, and learn the importance of embracing their true selves. For me it’s a must-watch film!
Melody from The Little Mermaid 2
And last but not least, we have Melody from The Little Mermaid 2!
As a kid I loved The Little Mermaid! I watched it several times (including the rewatch from a couple of weeks ago).
I don’t know if I like 1 better than 2 but that doesn’t really matter.
The daughter of Prince Eric and Ariel grows up with a love for the sea and as a child she is fascinated by it. As you can see in the movie she has the facial features of her mother and the dark hair from her father which makes her a black-haired Princess!
The movie is about her going against her mothers’ advice to not enter the sea and she gets captured by Ursula’s sister, Morgana, who wants to use Melody’s mermaid powers to conquer the surface world.
As with almost all the Disney movies, together with friends and family, Melody is able to defeat Morgana and in that way finding the freedom and happiness she had been seeking all along!
It’s a lovely feel good movie and a must-watch for every Little Mermaid fan who haven’t watched it!
I hope that you enjoyed the list of all 13 black-haired Disney Princesses!
